Nik is dark-haired, blue-eyed, lean as a rail, and always looks a little sleep-deprived. He is impeccably put together, making sure to keep his hair combed, his mustache trimmed, and his nails clean. He dresses formally for the most part, clothes neatly ironed, shoes buffed, unless the situation calls for an outfit more suitable to the rough-and-tumble life of an experimental scientist on the field--or, as it may turn out, a tireless fighter of crime. Whatever the case may be, Nik is rarely anything less than presentable, and never wears the same collar or uses the same handkerchief twice. His expression is often somewhat pensive, and his eyes contain an intensity that belies his customary soft-spoken composure.
While generally reclusive and markedly aloof even in social situations, to those who have with some considerable effort become what Nik calls "friend," Nik can be generous, amiable, sweet, and even charming. What some would call "arrogance" and he "an objective self-evaluation," coupled with a long list of eccentricities, however, can make it rather difficult to populate this seemingly exclusive circle. Usually reserved and self-contained, when embarking on some new series of experiments or coming close on a breakthrough, Nik can become notably single-minded and excitable--some might say a little manic.
He has issues concerning personal space and physical contact, a fascination with things that come in threes or numbers divisible by three, an uncommon fondness for animals (particularly pigeons), an obsession with hygiene, and an intense fear/repulsion of hair, dust, biological byproducts, smooth round objects, ear piercings, and jewelry. He makes a study of avoiding shaking hands and dining with others.
He received his formal education in electrical engineering, mathematics, physics, and philosophy; is fluent in Serbo-Croation, English, Latin, Italian, French, German, Hungarian, and Czech; and consumes alarming quantities of coffee, though not nearly as much as that monster Voltaire.
